Coming back real soon now…

Several of you very fine folks have left me comments or emails wondering where I am, will I ever return, and is there a better place to net-stalk me than on my very own Slash7. Well, the answers are: my life has been nuts, I’m coming back soon, and yes, but I’m not telling, respectively.

So, in the past four weeks, I have:

  • moved to a new apartment
  • spent 2 weeks’ vacation in Europe
  • spent 4 days in NYC
  • quit my job to open a consulting company
  • flown to Portland to speak at OSCON (where I am right now, writing this from my hotel room)

So you can see I’ve been justifiably off the map when it comes to content production.

But now you may be thinking: Waitjustacottonpickinminute. Cue squealing tires, car-backing-up noises.

Quit my job? To start a consulting company?

Yep.

So I have been a busy little bee. But starting September 1, I will be back to being your busy little bee. And as I keep saying, there are things in the works! But I wasn’t as interested in “playing on the computer” on vacation as I suspected (more burnt out than I realized!), and before and after that vacation I haven’t had a moment for downtime.

I keep telling people, if I can make it through to August, I just might survive all this.

About that consulting company…

Oh, yeah. So, John Athayde and I are going to take over the world. Or at least our little corner of the world.

We’re calling our new company Hyphenated People, after our belief in the benefits of a hyphenated existence (the name came to me when I was in the midst of describing myself as a designer-writer-programmer-photographer-dreamer, or so the new company mythos goes).

Shamefully, we don’t have a web site yet, mostly because we’re spending more time working with our clients. But look for developments soon.

And if you’re interested in top-notch user interface/user experience work? Or design work? Or Ruby on Rails development? (Or even PHP development—we know people.) Don’t be shy, write us!

For the moment, that means solving my little email address riddle, but I swear we’ll get something better up. Yes, soon.

Here’s the riddle:

  1. Take my first name (hint: it’s on the sidebar)
  2. Add an at-sign
  3. Add the domain name you’re reading this on (hint: slash_.com)
  4. Email!

Thanks, guys. I believe that what I’m working on will truly wow you, so I hope it’ll be worth the wait.

The SLASH Effect? Goodness me, what a coincidence.

I haven’t needed a book to make it this far, really… just the joy of doing multiple things, ever since I was a kid. 🙂

Loved your presentation at OSCON, partly for its informative and fun look at user interface design, but mostly because it introduced me to the "Shakespeare hates your emo poems" T-shirt, which is now everyone’s 2007 Christmas gift.

Good luck with the consulting gig…
