Rails Bloggin’

Hi there. My name is Amy, and I’m a Jill of Many Trades living and working out of Baltimore City, Maryland, USA. I enjoy candlelit dinners, expensive chocolates, and long walks on the piers of Baltimore (when the Chesapeak isn’t going through one of its ‘fragrant’ days, anyway).

One of the things I do for a living is technical writing. Another thing I do for a living is web development. Here, as they have before (in PHP Magazine, for instance), these two things merge.

I’m learning Ruby on Rails, because it looks freakin’ hot, adjectives I’ve never felt the need to apply to a programming language/framework before. There’s a lot to learn, and it’s very different from most other web development experiences. And since Rails is so new, there’s not a whole lot of documentation out there.

So, here we go. My Rails experience, documented.

Rails rocks – learning it too. Having to learn ruby at the same time. Tough going but the pay off looks worth the effort.

Hi I am reading your rails doc and its great… but "as long as there is a view named the same as the function that wants to call it."

where did function come from and what is it?

  3. I’m happy I stumbled upon you blog. Your technical writing is great, and the content is perfect given that I’m ramping up with Rails myself. In fact, it’s going to be the framework I use to develop an open-source sports league management system that I’ll be testing out on a kickball league (http://dckickball.org) that I’m going to be running this summer down in DC.

Anyway, keep up the good work!
